Arctic Ice compresses microbes in microscopic channels that are then released into the underlying subfreezing waters as some of the most nourishing elements at the start of the ocean food chain. Research has shown that these extremophiles can learn to communicate with each other. The long term impact of losing arctic ice and its foundational contribution to the food chain is unknown but a signifiant concern.
